Does insurance cover the In-Office Carpal Tunnel procedures?

NO – unfortunately both the In-Office Ultrasound Guided Carpal Tunnel Release device (UltraGuideCTR System) and the In-Office Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release device (Seg-Way Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel System) are currently not covered by insurance in the office.

Can we bill your insurance for the in-office ultrasound guided or endoscopic carpal tunnel release procedure and have you pay cash for the device itself?

NO – while this may seem like a reasonable option – IT IS INSURANCE FRAUD!  This is referred to as “Balance Billing” and is a violation of a surgeon’s contract with the insurance company and your contract with the insurance company.  You may find a surgeon or clinic who is suggesting you can do this.  DON’T DO IT!  When your insurance company finds out – they can refuse to pay for the procedure and make you pay for it – they can also drop you as a patient due to violation of their policy.  The surgeon can also get dropped by them as well.

Medicare Fraud

If you are a Medicare patient and your surgeon offers this option of paying for the device and they will bill your insurance for the procedure – YOU CAN REPORT THEM TO MEDICARE.   Again, this is considered fraud by Medicare and they will audit the surgeon’s practice.  Any other instances where they are discovered to have performed “balanced billing” will be recouped by Medicare.  Because you alerted Medicare to the fraud, you will be entitled to a percentage of the money Medicare recovers.

What if I sign an ABN Agreement with the Surgeon that states I will pay for the device if the insurance does not?

This again is not allowed for these devices.  If you surgeon tells you it is allowed THEY ARE WRONG, and they are committing insurance fraud and potentially jeopardizing your insurance.

Are other procedures in our office covered by insurance?

Yes – open carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release, Dupuytren’s contracture needle release, Dequervain’s release, cyst excision, tendon repair, foreign body removal, and other procedures can be covered by insurance in the office. If you have insurance and are interested in this option please contact our affiliated insurance practice.
